In July 1999 a chest of drawers has been sold by auction at Christie’s in London, a piece of furniture that belonged to Louis XVI at that time a property of the Rothschild family. It was made by the great cabinetmaker Jean Henry Riesener, with engravings and golden bronze details. The chest of drawers has been sold for the sum of:

70 millions of French francs = 10.671.431 Euro!!!

It is now visible at the Versailles Museum.
The sum has been paid partly by the Museum and by the owner of the Auction House, François Pinault, a well-known benefactor for the Museum.
