1715

Louis XV King of France dies. In Venice Giambattista Tiepolo begins his career painting the arch in the Church of Ospedaletto.

1716

Canaletto, his father Bernardo, an architect, and his brother Cristoforo, work to equip a few operas in Sant’Antangelo theatre, Venice.

1717

The apprenticeship in the family’s workshop begins and it lasts until 1720.

1720

The apprenticeship in the study of François Lemoyne then in the workshop of Jean-François Cars, in Rue de Saint-Jacques.


1721 Date of birth of Madame de Pompadour

1722

The collector Jean de Julienne asks him to print the work of Watteau.

1723

He wins the First Prize at the Academìe des Beaux-Arts and a scholarship of three years in Rome, in Villa Medici, but there aren’t vacancies.

1725

He has a successful exhibition at the Exposition de la Jeunesse, in Place Dauphine.

1728

A journey in Italy with Carle, François and Louis-Michel Van Loo. They stay at Villa Medici, the Italian office of the Academy of France.

1731

He comes back in Paris and works at a series of engravings for Julienne, called “Diverses figures chinoise peintes par Watteau au Chateau de la Muette” (A few Chinese figures painted for Watteau at La Muette Castle). In November 24, he is named “Painter of History” at the Academy.

1732

The year of the first dated work, “Venus asks Volcano the arms for Enea”, Louvre Museum.

1733

He marries Marie-Jeanne Buseau, his favourite model.

1734

He supplies his first projects for some tapestries (dedicated to the Italian Parties) to the director of the Manufactory of Beauvais, Mr. Oudry.

1735

His first commitment in Versailles, four “grisailles” with the Virtues for the Queen’s chamber.

1736

Date of birth of Juste-Nathan his unique son who will study architecture and watercolours.

1737

7 July, he is named Professor at the Academy along with Carle Van Loo and Natoire. He exhibits four ‘country subjects’ at the yearly Salon. The Salon will become biennials in 1753.

1738

He exhibits three subjects for the Soubise Hotel, at the Salon. They are in Paris, at the Archives Nationales.

1741

He sells a series of paintings to the Count of Tessin for the castle in Stockholm.

1742

Three sketches with Chinese subjects are exhibited at the Salon. The commitment is the Manufactory of Beauvais.

1743

He paints a few versions dedicated to a woman who ‘lies down on her belly’.


1745 The arrival of Madame de Pompadour at the court

1746

He paints the Dauphin’s apartment in Versailles.

1748

He paints a couple of “Nymphs of Diana who return from the hunting” for the dining room of the King in Fointainbleau.

1751

He teaches engraving and drawing to Madame Pompadour.

1753

The commitment for the ceiling of the Chamber of Council in Fointainbleau. The subject is the rising sun, which drives out the night. Mr. Falconet (who is the production manager at the Manufactory of Sèvres: Madame Pompadour moved the Manufactory of porcelains in this place in order to control the production) asks for help and Boucher gives him a few subjects.

1755

He paints the series of “The four Seasons” for Madame Pompadour (nowadays they belong to the private Frick collection, in New York). Mr. Oudry dies and he takes his place as inspector at the manufactory of Gobelins (famous for its tapestries), leaving the manufactory of Beauvais.

1757

He paints a few pictures with the Nativity and the Holy Family as main subjects.

1759

He begins his collaboration with Gilles Demarteau, the engraver.

1761

He is named Rector at the Academy. Diderot criticizes him for the first time.


1764 The death of Madame de Pompadour

1764

When Madame Pompadour dies her brother, the Marquis of Marigny, gives him protection.

1765

After the death of Carle Van Loo he is named First Painter of the King; in August 23 he is named Director of the Academy. Diderot strongly criticizes his exhibition at the Salon.

1770

30 May, he dies in his apartment in Paris; the King gives a pension to the widower.

1771

His collection of important pictures ( Albani, Domenichino, Correggio, Ricci, Tiepolo, Rembrandt, Teniers, Ruysdael and many more artists) is sold.
